Sri Lanka Visa Guide: Tourists, Volunteers and Remote Workers

Which Sri Lanka visa matches your trip? Official ETA, volunteering, digital nomad and retirement-stay rules explained by travel purpose.

The right Sri Lanka visa depends on what you plan to do, not simply how long you hope to stay. A beach holiday, a volunteer placement and a year of remote work are different purposes. Sri Lanka’s official guidance has separate rules for visit visas, residence categories and its Digital Nomad Visa. Treating them as interchangeable can create problems at the airport or after arrival.

This is a decision guide, not an application service. It was checked against Sri Lankan government sources in October 2026. Fees, eligible nationalities and procedures can change, so use the official immigration sites when you’re ready to apply.

If you’re going on holiday

Sri Lanka uses an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for many short visitors. The official ETA website states that, from 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 named countries are eligible for a free 30-day tourist ETA, subject to the published terms. It also states that travellers covered by the scheme must obtain their ETA before arrival. The government’s notice describes separate reciprocal arrangements for Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore.

A free ETA is not the same as no ETA. Check the nationality list and the exact steps for your passport on the live site. Other passport holders may have different fees or procedures, and certain nationalities have additional application requirements.

The ETA application guidance lists a passport valid for at least six months from arrival, a confirmed return ticket and sufficient funds among arrival requirements. Check the terms again before departure and keep your approval notice available offline.

If you want more time, official guidance discusses extending short-visit permission, but an extension is not automatic. Apply through the department’s current process while you remain eligible; don’t count on informal arrangements or a border trip to fix an expiring permission.

If you’re travelling to volunteer

This is where travellers often receive misleading advice. The Department of Immigration’s general visa conditions say that a visit visa does not permit paid or unpaid employment other than what is specifically authorised. The department also lists volunteers in its residence-visa educational category.

That does not mean every activity advertised as “volunteering” fits neatly into one universal route. Ask the host organisation what specific duties you will perform, what status it expects you to hold and which supporting paperwork it can provide. Then confirm the permission with the immigration department before applying. A traveller’s intentions may be good, but the legality of the work still matters.

For program selection and safeguarding questions, see our guide to responsible volunteering in Sri Lanka. Immigration permission and a placement’s ethical standards are separate checks. You need both.

Sri Lanka has published a Digital Nomad Visa category for eligible adults whose remote employment, freelance work or business serves clients or companies outside Sri Lanka. The government’s document gives a minimum monthly remittance of US$2,000 for the main applicant, describes a one-year visa that may be renewed and lists an annual visa fee of US$500 per person. It also includes extra conditions for dependants and documents applicants must supply.

The category explicitly prohibits local employment. It is not a way to bypass a work permit for a Sri Lankan employer. Confirm your eligibility and documentary requirements with immigration before arranging a long rental or buying non-refundable tickets. Our digital nomad and remote work guide covers the practical side of accommodation and connectivity.

If you’re planning a retirement stay

Older travel articles often advertise the My Dream Home retirement scheme as though any new applicant could still use it. The immigration department now describes that programme, and the Resident Guest Scheme, as extension-only for existing holders. Its residence visa information makes that distinction clear.

If you want to spend several months or move permanently, ask the authority which currently open status, if any, fits your circumstances. Do not assume that a monthly rental, private medical insurance or a retirement pension automatically gives you residency rights. A short tourist visit is still subject to its own purpose and permitted duration.

Our long-stay planning guide for retirees covers everyday practicalities separately from visa eligibility.

A practical application sequence

First, write down your nationality, passport expiry date, travel dates, reason for entering and every activity you expect to perform. If you will mix holiday time with volunteering or remote work, include both. Apply based on your actual activities, not the simplest label on the form.

Second, check the official visa categories and fees. A third-party agency may provide a legitimate paid service, but its summary is not the law. The official sites are eta.gov.lk and immigration.gov.lk. Look carefully at web addresses before entering passport or payment details.

Third, collect supporting documents while you still have time to correct them. Double-check passport numbers, nationality, spelling and email addresses. A mismatch can delay travel. Keep a copy of every submission and decision.

Finally, check conditions again just before departure. A valid approval does not excuse you from arrival requirements, and entry is ultimately determined by the competent authority. If your plans change after arrival, obtain advice before taking on a new role or staying beyond your permitted period.

Avoid these four common mistakes

The first is assuming “visa-free” headlines mean no application is necessary. The second is treating unpaid work as automatically exempt from employment restrictions. Third, remote workers sometimes assume that earnings paid abroad settle immigration and tax obligations without further review. Fourth, people planning retirement may rely on older schemes whose new applications are no longer accepted.

All four mistakes have the same cure: match your proposed activity to the official category, and confirm the current terms using the authority’s own publications.

Frequently asked questions

Do travellers from the 40 listed countries still need an ETA?

Yes. The government notice effective 25 May 2026 says eligible nationals can receive a free 30-day tourist ETA, but must obtain an ETA before arriving. Check the list and rules for your passport on the official portal.

Can I teach English as an unpaid volunteer using a tourist ETA?

Do not assume that is authorised. Sri Lanka’s visit-visa terms restrict paid and unpaid employment. Ask the placement and immigration department which permission covers the exact duties.

Can a digital nomad work for a Sri Lankan company?

The published Digital Nomad Visa conditions say holders cannot engage in local employment and must receive income from foreign sources. Confirm a different permission if the work involves a Sri Lankan employer or customers.

Can I use the My Dream Home scheme to apply for retirement residence now?

The immigration department currently marks it as extension-only for existing holders. Check the current residence categories directly instead of paying an intermediary based on old advertisements.

Where do I check extensions or changing fees?

Start with the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the official ETA service. Fees and application routes can change, so avoid relying on a screenshot of last year’s instructions.
