Support English learning at a Buddhist teaching placement in the Galle area.
Volunteer at a Pirivena and support young Buddhist monks with English language learning in southern Sri Lanka.
The program is based around Unawatuna and Galle and is open year-round to volunteers aged 17 and above. The standard program schedule is Monday to Friday mornings, and the weekly fee is $180.

A Pirivena is an educational institution connected with Buddhist monastic education in Sri Lanka. In this program, volunteers support monks with English lessons and language practice.
The role can include classroom support, lesson planning, English teaching and one-to-one tutoring. Volunteers may prepare their own lessons or continue from work developed by previous volunteers.
The usual placement runs from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Confirm the schedule for your preferred dates before you travel.
The exact level depends on the monks and the placement. Activities can include:

A useful lesson does not need to be complicated. Clear examples, conversation practice and exercises matched to the learners’ level are often more useful than trying to cover too much material at once.
The current program information does not list a formal teaching qualification as a general requirement. Ask the team about any placement-specific requirements before applying.
Preparation still matters. Volunteers should be willing to plan lessons, listen to local guidance and adapt their teaching to the students’ current English level.
This placement takes place in a religious educational setting. Volunteers should follow the dress, behaviour and classroom expectations explained by the local team and Pirivena staff.
The purpose is English education. Cultural exchange may happen naturally through conversation, but volunteers should approach religious and cultural topics with respect rather than treating the placement as a tourist experience.
The standard structured schedule is 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Monday to Friday.
A session may include a prepared lesson, conversation practice, reading, grammar exercises or individual help. The exact routine depends on the Pirivena and the monks’ current learning needs.
Afternoons are generally free for personal plans.
Volunteers stay at the Volunteer House at No. 24, Buonavista, Rumassala, Galle 80600. Each volunteer has a single air-conditioned room, and free Wi-Fi is available at the house.
The accommodation is around a five-minute tuk-tuk ride from Galle City. Breakfast and dinner are prepared daily. Meals are mainly Sri Lankan, with some Western dishes included in the weekly menu. Sri Lankan food can be spicier than some visitors are used to and may include seafood and meat. Vegetarian meals are available on request.
Western food and other dining options are easy to find in the Unawatuna area.
The daily routine at the Volunteer House starts with breakfast, with meditation included as part of the morning routine for volunteers who wish to take part.
Regular volunteer hours finish in the morning, so afternoons are generally available for rest, local travel or personal plans. Weekends fall outside the usual Monday to Friday placement schedule.
Possible activities around the south coast include visiting Galle Fort, spending time at Unawatuna Beach, snorkelling or diving around Unawatuna, visiting Jungle Beach, travelling toward Mirissa, swimming at the Talpe Rock Pools, visiting Koggala Lake and exploring Kanneliya Rainforest.
Travel activities, entrance fees, tours and transport are separate unless they are specifically included in your confirmed arrangement.
Airport pickup is provided for volunteers who commit to four weeks or more. If you plan a shorter stay, confirm your arrival transport before travelling so you know how you will get from the airport to Galle.
Because placements depend on local arrangements, submit your preferred dates before making assumptions about availability for a particular week.
The fee is $180 per week.
